Gilliland arrested after allegedly attacking Republic police officers

Republic resident reportedly upset over missing vape, trashes property, gets tased by police
A Republic man was taken into custody after he allegedly attacked Republic Police officers over a missing vape. Zachery Gilliland, 31, is charged with unlawful use of a weapon, second degree property damage and fourth degree assault, special victims.
According to the probable cause statement, on Friday, Dec. 2, Gilliland allegedly spoke with a Republic Police officer over the phone, during which time he was reportedly upset about a missing vape. The officer said Gilliland became confrontational and shouted profanities before demanding the officer buy him a new one. The officer stated he told Gilliland that the Republic Police were not going to respond to find him his vape or buy him a new one, after which, he said, Gilliland stopped responding. The officer said he also heard noises over the phone that sounded like property being damaged.
A few minutes later, the officer reported, dispatch contacted officers about a man whose neighbors claimed he was breaking the windows of his apartment and running around outside screaming at people. Dispatch also said someone mentioned a “loud boom” and was uncertain if it was a gun shot.
Republic Police responded to the scene. Approaching Gilliand’s residence, the officer said, he saw a window broken in Gilliland’s apartment, and the glass lying on the ground below.
One of the officers attempted to speak with Gilliand through the window. At first, Gilliland reportedly refused to leave the apartment, but eventually came out and began shouting profanities at the officer, according to the probable cause statement.
The officer who wrote the probable cause statement reported that police tried to deescalate Gilliland, but he allegedly continued to shout profanities at them and threatened to fight them. Additionally, the officer stated, Gilliland broke the wooden banister on the apartment complex stairwell and threw it at one of the officers. At that point, the officer stated, Gilliland was tased and taken into custody.
Gilliland appeared in court on Wednesday, Feb. 14, for a confined docket hearing; he is scheduled to appear again for a counsel status hearing on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
