Greene County bridge proclaimed a historic site

A bridge dedication for the Sac River Arch Bridge on Farm Road 128 took place on Monday, Sept. 21, complete with a proclamation from Presiding Commissioner Bob Dixon, declaring the rare and vintage bridge a historic site. 
 
Dave Coonrod, member of the Greene County Historic Sites Board, spearheaded the push to delegate this bridge a historic landmark in the county and spoke at the dedication ceremony. 
 
“I live adjacent to here and I’ve lived out here a little over 30 years,” said Coonrod. “And you know, it’s a great area. It’s kind of… the best kept secret in Greene County out this way.”
 
According to Coonrod, the bridge is one of only a few arch bridges left in the state and is the oldest of the known handful that are still in service. 
 
The bridge, according to the county, dates back to 1908 when the county court awarded the contract to the Canton Bridge Company following a petition from 46 local landowners. 
 
“We’re glad as the historic sites board to be able to find places like this to bring before the county commission to consider for designation,” said Coonrod. “I’m really pleased this worked out.”
