Sherley Ann “Blades” Hammons

Sherley Ann “Blades” Hammons, of Republic passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026 at the age of 92.  She was born at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, to Burl Lester and Edna Mae “Mooneyham” Blades on Aug. 18, 1933.  As a child she attended St. Elmo School, a one room country school that was located near the Jot Em Down store. While attending Republic High, she played drums in the school band and always enjoyed the school outings. She graduated from Republic High School with the class of 1951. She worked as an accountant at the Montgomery Wards warehouse catalog store (later acquired by Mobil Oil Corporation) in Kansas City for over 24 years. She retired at the age of 77. She was a member of the Blades Chapel Church and was baptized at Meadowview Baptist Church.
She is preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, several classmates and friends. She is survived by her brother Gary Blades and wife Soni of Republic; daughter Pamela Hammons and Brad Carson, of Olathe, Kan.; son Scott Hammons and wife Connie, of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; niece Suzie “Blades” Morrow and husband David, of Fair Grove; nephew Aaron Blades of Republic; as well as other extended family and close friends.
Visitation will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, with funeral services beginning at 2 p.m. She will be laid to rest in Wade Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations should be given to Blades Chapel Church and/or Republic Historical Society in care of Meadors Funeral Home.
