A Republic man was taken to the Lawrence County Jail after he allegedly assaulted a woman. Teddy DeMoss, 58, was booked into the jail on Saturday, Feb. 18.
According to the probable cause statement in the case, a Lawrence County deputy sheriff was called to the residence, where he spoke with the victim. She told the deputy that DeMoss had struck her twice and pushed her around the house and the front yard. The woman also showed the deputy where there was a taser lying in the front yard; she said that she had tried to use it to defend herself, but DeMoss took it from her and threw it into the yard.
The deputy reported that the victim had a bloody mouth and bruises on her arms and legs. He also said the woman told him that she had moved out of the residence but had just moved back two weeks earlier because DeMoss “had been beating up on her before she had proof.”
The deputy also spoke with DeMoss, who described the woman as a “raging alcoholic” and said that she had been “falling into stuff all day.” He also said that he did push the woman and took the taser from her in self defense. The deputy reported that DeMoss told him that the woman must have bruised herself. He also said that once she started arguing with him, and after he took her taser away, he went to his room until she informed him the police were on their way. Then, he said, he sat at the kitchen table to await them.
The deputy reported that he noted DeMoss had blood on his left hand which was consistent with the victim’s injuries.
Medical personnel came to check on the victim, but she refused to go to the hospital. DeMoss was taken into custody. While he was being taken to the jail, DeMoss allegedly told the deputy, “When I get out of jail, if she is still in the house, you guys will get called again, but it will be worse.”
According to online records, DeMoss appeared in court on Friday, Feb. 23, where conditions for his release were set; if DeMoss is released on bond, he will be subject to GPS monitoring. He was also ordered not to return to his residence until after 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25.
DeMoss is next scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, April 13, for a preliminary hearing.
