Moore shares life lessons in self-published book
Rachel Moore is sharing lessons she has learned over the course of her life in a book she recently published. “In Everything, Give Thanks” is, as Moore describes it, “a compilation of testimonial type short stories about things that have happened to me in the past, and what I learned from those circumstances or events.”
The stories contained in the book, Moore said, are written so that readers can become immersed in them.
“I try to include a lot of imagery-provoking words in my books as a way to invite my readers into my stories,” she said. “I want my readers to feel as though they are in the very place and the very circumstance, I am in. All the stories in my book are true, and the verses come from the King James Version of the Bible.”
Moore believes that sharing her stories is mutually beneficial for both her and her readers.
“I have always felt that if I could share what I have been through, and share the pain I felt, and what I learned from it, then those things and that suffering wouldn't be in vain,” she said. “Sharing it with others gives my experiences a purpose. If I can share them, I will not have suffered in vain. But the main purpose is to glorify God.”
Two year journey
It took Moore two years to write “In Everything, Give Thanks.” At first, she said, it was hard to figure out what she wanted to say, but once she got past that, she was actually able to write the book rather quickly.
“I seemed to have a bad case of writer's block for what seemed like the longest time,” she said, “but then I finally broke through that, and the words just seemed to flow. Once I started actually writing on it, it only took about four and a half months or so.”
Moore chose to self-publish her book for two reasons. The first was to maintain the integrity of her writing.
“I am a Christian author and I wanted my books to contain the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,” she said. “I was very concerned that if I went with a traditional publisher, because of the religious concerns of offending someone, I was afraid that they would just edit Jesus right out of my books and I did not want that to happen.”
The second reason was she felt a traditional publisher would have taken too big a share of any money her book made.
“I have known several authors personally and they told me that the publishing companies keep 50- to 60-percent of the sale of each book, and the author, who does all the hard work gets what is left,” she said. “I need all the money I can make to provide for my family, and I didn't want to give that money away for no reason.”
This is the third book Moore has written. Her first one was “Bounty from the Master’s Table,” and her second was “’Moore’ from Jesus.” Those books were also self-published, with the first book selling 120 copies and the second selling 135.
Moore held a book signing at the Republic Library on Tuesday, Oct. 26, and hopes to do more. For those wishing to buy her new book, it costs $9.00. “Bounty from the Master’s Table” and “’Moore’ from Jesus” are also available for sale; they cost $7.00 and $8.00, respectively. They can be purchased at book signings, or by contacting Moore directly.
