Estimated by city officials to have been built in the 1970s, the four aging tennis courts at J.R. Martin park shown above and left have seen better days. They will be removed to make way for a new community event space this summer. (Photos by Ryan Squibb)

Republic to remove tennis courts; get new tennis, pickleball courts on south side by water parkThe hits keep coming from the Republic Parks and Rec Department.
It was announced at the Feb. 6 Republic City Council meeting that new pickleball and tennis courts will soon be built in Miller Park just north of the Republic Community Center.
The addition to the park will occupy space formerly used by the Republic Saddle Club and will likely include 2-3 tennis courts and 6-8 pickleball courts for general public use and for park programming use, per Parks and Rec Director Jared Keeling.
Although the final cost has yet to be determined, the department has set aside $600,000-$650,000 for the build, which is funded through a 1/4 cent Parks and Recreation Capital Improvement Sales Tax which passed in 2022.
If all goes as planned the project will be complete by the end of July.
J.R. Martin courts to be removed
With the new tennis courts coming in, the old tennis courts located at J.R. Martin Park, Hines Street, will be removed to make way for “The Loop at J.R. Martin Park,” a new community event space. The removal will also likely take place in July, which will be followed by the beginning stages of The Loop.
