The 2022-23 basketball season has come to end for both the boys’ and girls’ teams at Ash Grove High School after both lost in their Class 2, District 13 tournaments.
The Pirates hosted this year’s district tournament, but fell to the Weaubleau Tigers in the district tournament championship game on Friday, Feb. 24, 52-51.
Weaubleau led 17-12 after the first quarter and increased their lead to 30-18 by the half. But the Pirates went on an exciting 14-0 run in front of a capacity crowd to open the second half. In total, Ash Grove tallied 19 points in the quarter while holding Weaubleau to just five points. The Pirates maintained a slight 37-35 lead heading into the final quarter of play. Weaubleau though was able to rebound in the fourth and outscore Ash Grove, 17-15 to win the game and the district championship by one point. Although the host team had a chance to win it in the final moments, it wasn't meant to be.
"I was proud of how our guys competed all season, even down to the very end,” said head coach Grant Williamson. “Especially proud of our five seniors who sacrificed for our program."
Brady Nicholson paced Ash Grove with 30 points.
The Pirates reached the championship game by defeating Liberal in the semifinals on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 63-37.
"This was a great team win,” said Williamson. “Everyone executed on both ends of the floor and have given ourselves an opportunity to compete for a district championship."
Asher Rust and Nate Trammell both led Ash Grove with 13 points each and Tyler Tummons added 11 points in the win.
Ash Grove ends their season with a commendable 20-7 record.
