The Nathan and Olive Boone Homestead State Historic Site in Ash Grove held a chocolate making demonstration on Saturday, Feb. 12, as a Living History Saturday event.
During the three-hour presentation, Melissa Blank, assistant superintendent at the park, demonstrated how chocolate was made in the 19th century. As part of the process, she crushed ground cocoa beans into cocoa butter on a heated grindstone while also speaking about the history of chocolate and how the chocolate making process evolved throughout history. Participants at the event had a chance to try their hand at the chocolate-making process; some also got to sample raw cocoa beans.
