'Forever home' underway for former Springfield police officer
Former Springfield Police officer Mark Priebe will be receiving a new house this year thanks to a generous effort by the Gary Sinise Foundation. The house, which is located in rural Republic and expected to be finished this fall, has many amenities that will make it easier for Priebe to function following an on-duty incident that left him paralyzed in 2020.
The home will come equipped with features such as lower sinks and cooking appliances to make for easier access. The home will also have smart features, according to Priebe.
"I'll be able to control some parts of the home with my voice or a smartphone and tablet," he said.
The goal of the project is to assist the former police officer in being more independent around the home, as many of the standard appliances can be unaccessible or too high for someone in a wheelchair to easily reach. The house is said to have entryways that are all easily accessed, allowing Priebe to come and go without hassle. The new home will be a fully functional, smart house as well, according to Priebe.
Supporters were invited to tour the new home and took a shuttle from a local church in order to attend. Many of the attendees signed their names and a small message of inspiration on the barebones wooden supports of the house. Those who attended included co-workers from his old police force, friends, family and others from the community. After the signing, there was a dedication ceremony.
The Gary Sinise Foundation expressed their excitement with the new project in a release on their website.
"The Gary Sinise Foundation looks forward to building Mark, Heather, and their two kids a forever home where they can put down roots and spend quality time enjoying all that life has to offer."
Priebe is also looking forward to the new home.
"It's another step to have some more freedom," he said.
Priebe also stated that he sees his family living there for a long while.
"We are very excited," he said. "This is going to be our forever home."
