EMMAGENE I. (PAYNE) HURD

Emmagene I. (Payne) Hurd passed away Saturday, Aug. 19, just four days past her 100th birthday. Hurd was born in the hills of the Smoky Mountains near Tellico Plains, Tenn. on Aug. 15, 1923, to Ethel (Evans) Payne and Ulys Payne.
She started working at 12 years old, pitting apricots in southern California. She then worked at a number of different places including Gold Bond Furniture, Royal Typewriter, Venture and ultimately retired from General Electric. Her most important and cherished role was as mother and wife.
She is survived by her son, G. Allen (Joyce) Hurd, of Republic; and her daughter, Linda (Larry) Jones, of Springfield; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and twin great-great-grandchildren.
Hurd is preceded in death by her little brother, Issac “Buddy” Hurd; her parents; her husband, Garnie; and a granddaughter.
Her family received visitors on Friday, Aug. 25, in Greenlawn Funeral Home North; a celebration of life followed. Her wishes were to be cremated and buried next to her husband at a later date.
